All graduate applicants should apply online at gradschool.fsu.edu. The online application system asks students for information that is needed both by the Department of Statistics and Florida State University.
The department typically offers admission only in fall and spring terms. Please note that we do not offer assistantships for spring admission. If students wish to be considered for assistantships, they should apply for fall.
Deadlines for Admission
- Financial aid and assistantship consideration for all students: Jan. 15
- Priority deadline for international students: Jan. 15. If students will require a new visa for admission, they must apply by this deadline.
- Spring: Nov. 1
- Fall: July 1
Minimum Requirements for Admission
Grades
- At least a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. institution, or a comparable degree from an international institution, with a minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average GPA in all coursework attempted while registered as an upper-division undergraduate student working towards a bachelor's degree; OR
- A graduate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or a comparable degree from an international institution; AND

GRE
The GRE is optional for our graduate programs. GRE Scores will be considered by the department for up to 5 years after the exam is taken. If ETS will not send your scores but it has been within 5 years since you sat for an exam, please include your official test score copy in your online application. FSU's school code is 5219
English-speaking Scores
If your first language is not English, you must submit an English-speaking test score.
If you do not wish to be considered for funding, you must have a minimum score of the following on one of the following tests:
- Internet Based TOEFL (IBTOEFL): 80
- Paper based TOEFL (TOEFL): 550
- Michigan Language Assessment: 55 (Fall 2022 and Forward)
- International English Language Testing System (Academic IELTS): 6.5
- Cambridge C1 Advanced Level: 180 (Fall 2022 and Forward)
- Pearson Test of English (PTE): 55
- Duolingo: 120 (Summer 2022 and Forward)
- To be considered for departmental graduate teaching assistantships, you must have at least the following:
- TOEFL Overall: 90
- Speaking score: 23

If you are an international student and wish to be considered for an assistantship, you cannot waive your TOEFL requirement, and must submit a TOEFL score.
- TOEFL waiver: If you have a degree (B.S., M.S., or higher) from a U.S. school or a country where English is the native language, the University's TOEFL score requirement can be waived. However, all international students who are receiving an assistantship that scored 25 or below on the TOEFL speaking section will be required to take a SPEAK test given by FSU before classes begin. If you are an international student and wish to be considered for an assistantship, you cannot waive your TOEFL requirement, and must submit a TOEFL score.
Prior Coursework
Generally we expect applicants to have completed Calculus 1-3, Linear Algebra, one course in Applied Statistics, and one course in Probability. Two semesters of advanced calculus (intermediate analysis, real analysis with proofs) is needed for timely entrance into the Ph.D. program

4. Statement of Purpose
A 1-3 page statement describing your background, accomplishments, and goals
5. Unofficial Transcript(s) from all previous institutions. Please note: unofficial transcripts are sufficient for application review for US institutions only, official transcripts are required for students if admitted.
6. Span Tran evaluations, or any other credential evaluation from a NACES approved evaluator, are required for all international institutions attended. This is required for application review. Your application can't be reviewed without an official credential evaluation.

8. Test Scores
Scores if necessary, must be received by FSU’s Office of Admissions in order to consider your application. If your scores are too old to be sent, but were still taken within the last five years, please include your official copy of your test scores with your online application. FSU’s school code is 5219.
Financial Aid Information
An applicant's eligibility for a departmental teaching or research assistantship will be considered during the evaluation for admission. Financial aid offers are usually only provided for fall term applicants.
