Using MINITAB for Statistical Calculations STA 3024/D. Meeter

All calculations should be done on Minitab, a powerful statistical system, unless you prefer to use a statistical system which you already know. Output from Minitab can easily be incorporated into your reports if you do them on a word processor such as MS Word.

Minitab for Windows Version 13 is available in the ACNS computer labs located at 315 Carothers Hall; at 202 Union, and the Strozier Library basement. A student version which is powerful but limited to 5,000 cells (limiting data sets to say < 1,000 numbers) can be purchased from the Bookstore for about $75. (It can be rented for $26/semester; see www.e-academy.com , or downloaded free for a month.)

Starting Minitab: Click Start on bottom left of screen; point at Programs item in the popup menu, point at Minitab 12 for Windows in the second popup menu, and click on Minitab in the third popup menu.

Enter data by columns, e.g. the observations in Column 1 and the corresponding treatment number (1,2,or 3) in Column 2. Name Column 1 ‘Time’ and Column 2 ‘Treatment’ in the row above Row 1.

To save what you have done so far on a floppy disk (if you are not using your own computer),

Click File > Save Project As >

At "Save in" click ‘up one level’ (the folder symbol) to "My computer"; u down to "3 ˝ floppy (A:)"; type in project name; click Save (you must have a floppy in the drive)

Click Stat > ANOVA > Oneway

At "Response" type Time ; at "Factor" type Treatment;

put Ö at "Store residuals" and Ö at "Store fits"

Click Graphs put Ö at "Dotplots of data" and at "Residuals versus fits"

Click ‘OK’ for Graphs Dialog Box and ‘OK’ for Oneway Dialog Box.

Click File > Save Project to save everything under the name you specified above.

At this point you will have several Minitab windows open; to manage which ones you are looking at, it may be helpful to click Window above on the Minitab Menu Bar, e.g. Window > Tile

Putting your Minitab (MTB) Output into a Word Processor (WP)

Make sure the word processor and Minitab are both running.

Text: In the MTB Session window, highlight the text you want. Click Edit > Copy

Click into the WP, place the cursor where you want the output, click Edit > Paste

Graph: Activate MTB Graph window; click Editor > View; Click Edit > Copy Graph

Click into the WP, place the cursor where you want the graph, click Edit > Paste

Note: the graphs can be hard to manage if you try to move them around. Sometimes one graph will jump on top of another and hide it. Other times, if there is not enough room, it will jump to another page.

Get Acquainted With Minitab: Use the above instructions to enter the data in the first example in the text (time to death of mice.) Reproduce the output shown on the back of this sheet, but do not hand it in. Open a document in your wo rd processor and copy into it the Analysis of Variance (keep the Courier font; you may need to use 10 pt type to fit it in) and the graph. Print it.
